Our Homage to the Great White.

The white shirt has to be the ultimate wardrobe staple – a universal closet classic that takes you effortlessly through all the seasons. It is an iconic piece that remains at the very centre of fashion. It has been modelled by all the fashionistas of the last Century including Coco Chanel herself to being the hero of Vogue’s (US) 100th anniversary issue.

Every decent brand from high brow to high street has its own myriad selection of white shirts available (currently there are 301 just on ASOS). This season, sees Karen Millen launch its own White Shirt Project – a capsule collection of seven different shirt styles. Each piece in the collection is  unique, exploring new-season proportions such as laid-back boyfriend shapes, oversized frills and body-sculpting designs. Slightly more upmarket but still definitely within reach is Modern Rarity John Lewis’ new luxury label of beautiful pieces that transcend seasons, which has a selection of impeccably crafted shirts and shirt dresses as the very centre of its timeless collection.

No wardrobe is complete without the humble white shirt as this failsafe item suits everyone  – whatever size and whatever colour, wherever they are going. It is a blank canvas ready to be styled as you like it.

Here are our 5 ways to Rock a White Shirt this Summer

The Layering trend is here to stay and white shirts are an essential component. Whether you style one under a jumper for colder days or use it to smarten up a dress or have it peeking out under a jacket you can’t go wrong. Savvy Spring Summer layering means you are aways perfectly dressed for our unpredictable weather.

Possibly the best look in the world. Jeans and a white shirt are the ultimate pairing like Bonnie & Clyde, Gin & Tonic and Bacon & Eggs. One is supremely improved by the other.

White shirt plus funky pumps or trainers, leather jacket and jeans = the epitome of cool classic. Enough Said.

As far as we are concerned monocrome is one of our very favourite fashion looks. There is nothing more chic than simple classics and this is it. It is power dressing at its best. Go for black or dark navy trousers or skirts to accompany a crisp white shirt. To prevent the waitress look add stunning accessories (see oversized earrings).

This Summer, the oversized shirt is the business, loose enough to flow over skinny jeans or cut offs or, tucked into a high waisted skirt. For the confident and daring, it can be also be worn over shorts. Throw it over anything – belted or billowing to be bang on point.
