There’s generally a universal groan when someone bright and chirpy suggests a Christmas board game right after you have eaten a whole turkey on Christmas evening. This forced pseudo-spontaneous fun can turn a relaxing Christmas night into a horror of arguments, tempers and childlike sulks. So to help instil harmony & goodwill into your festivities, we have pulled together a roundup of our favourite Christmas board games. We’ve included some vintage oldies and some great new games to be played whilst munching Roses and sipping one our gin cocktails!
Telestrations is a cross between Chinese whispers and Pictionary. Roll of the dice determines the word or phrase from the card then player 1 simply sketches it and pass it on to each player who has to guess what you’ve drawn and summarise your drawing in words and so on. Alternating between drawing and writing, the end results are usually hilarious! The great thing about this game is that you don’t have to be an artist or good with words, you just need to be able to laugh!
5 Second Rule
It should be easy to name 3 things that you brush, 3 things that are red or 3 famous Michaels but when the timer is ticking and all eyes are on you can you do it? It’s all in good fun with this fast-paced family game that generally causes people to be laughing too hard to even answer. Definitely one for after the Christmas Pudding.

Still an old classic! This is a game that should belong in every family games cupboard. It’s aimed at 6+ but really 4-5’s could give it a good shot. The idea of the game is to get your four pieces around the board first. Instead of throwing dice you turn cards which tell you where you should move, forwards, backwards etc. Expect children to be screaming with glee or fear throughout!

We love this Melissa & Doug Hangman because it’s wooden and beautifully made. It’s a classic twist on the traditional game with letters tiles that flip on bungee elastic so no little annoying pieces to loose! With it’s erasable white board and dry erase marker it’s perfect to play on the go.

Fantastically fun game that can be played with all ages from tots to grandparents! It’s a game of thinking on your feet and singing at the same time. One player says a word and the race is on for everyone else to sing a song, as quickly as they can, containing that word. It doesn’t matter what era of music you know or if you are tone deaf because with everyone shouting the words of their song in effort to win, it’s just a matter of fun!

This is probably the only game you can win without knowing anything at all! Balderdash is one of our favourite games of all time. It’s a hilarious bluffing game in which you try to con your opponents into believing your made up answers to real definitions. Each turn a card entry is read out and every player writes down their own made up answer. The fun really starts when all these fake answers are shuffled up with the real one and read aloud. Everyone then tries to pick which is correct. Players whose phony answers are picked score a move on the board. You can be as wacky or serious as you want, absolutely anything goes–but one thing is sure, the answer that sounds right probably isn’t.

Cards against humanity
Cards Against Humanity is a party game for horrible people. Unlike most of the party games you’ve played before, Cards Against Humanity is as despicable and awkward but cringingly fun. The game is simple. Each round, one player asks a question from a Black Card (pretty much every question is wholly un-PC), and everyone else answers with their funniest White Card which are then read out & voted on.
If you are easily offended, under 18 or are politically correct then this game is definitely not for you. In fact a dark sense of humour is probably a prerequisite before you take it out after the dinner mints. If you already have this game but have worn out your black cards then the good news is there are expansion boxes to reinvigorate your questions to be even more horrible. Go on you horrible people ….
