If you are feeling frazzled then we know just the place – a place where it’s okay not to be okay.
We frequently feel a tiny bit frazzled but for those whose frazzle rating is being get a bit too crispy, then we have exciting news! Marks & Spencer has joined forces with comedian and leading mental health awareness campaigner Ruby Wax to launch a selection of Frazzled Cafes in its stores.
These are not just for the one-in-four of us who will suffer from mental illness at some point in our lives; these are for the four-in-four of us feeling frazzled and overwhelmed by the stresses of modern life.
To quote founder Ruby Wax in ‘A Mindfulness Guide for the Frazzled’: “A neurobiologist might say that someone is ‘stuck in a state of “frazzle”’. They mean that, for this person, constant stress is overloading the nervous system, flooding it with cortisol and adrenaline; their attention is fixed on what’s worrying them and not the job in hand, which can lead to burn-out.”
The UK is rated the 7th highest nation in the Western world for prescribing antidepressants (four million annually) and there is a pressing need to help people cope with overwhelming stress. Studies have proven that one of the best ways to beat stress is to share your feelings with peers and other-support networks.
The idea is Frazzled Cafes, led by trained volunteer facilitators, will provide a safe, non-judgemental place where frazzled people can meet on a regular basis to talk it out and share their personal stories – a place where its okay not to be okay.
There are currently have three Frazzled Cafes running regularly, in London (Marble Arch and Victoria) and Brighton. Others will soon be rolling-out in Cambridge, Canterbury, Leeds, London – Canary Wharf, Newcastle-under-Lyme, Norwich and Nottingham with even more locations set to be added throughout the year.

Frazzled Cafe is about people coming together to share their stories, calmly sitting together, stating their case and feeling validated as a result. Feeling heard, to me, has always been half the cure.
