Chatsworth House, based in Derbyshire, is home to the Duke and Duchess of Devonshire, and has been passed down through 16 generations of the Cavendish family.

The house contains an important collection of paintings, furniture, Old Master drawings, neoclassical sculptures, books and other artefacts and is set in 105 acres of expansive parkland with stunning gardens designed by Capability Brown.

As well as the house and the extensive gardens and grounds, there is a working farmyard and children’s playground for the young ones.

Chatsworth’s ‘House Style: Five Centuries Of Fashion

Curated by American Vogue’s international editor-at-large Hamish Bowles, this stunning exhibition explores five centuries of fashion and adornment in the Devonshire Collection.

Notable Names

House Style demonstrates the power of fashion by exploring the clothing and accessories from the Cavendish family. The women at the centre of the exhibition are notable including Bess of Hardwick, one of the most powerful women of the 16th century; the 18th century “Empress of Fashion” Georgiana, Duchess of Devonshire; and Adele Astaire, the sister and dance partner of Fred Astaire. Deborah Devonshire and Nancy Mitford, two of the infamous Mitford sisters, Model Stella Tennant (Granddaughter of the 11th Duchess) as well as John F Kennedy’s sister ‘Kick’ Kennedy are also featured.

Fashion Themes

The exhibition is cleverly ordered by themes such as Coronation Dress, The Devonshire House Ball, The Georgiana Effect, Country Living, and Entertaining At Chatsworth. Highlights include pieces from Jean-Phillipe Worth and Christian Dior couture to items from Gucci, Erdem and Alexander McQueen. It also explores the livery and uniforms worn at Chatsworth across the ages, as well as 19th-century fancy-dress costumes and the family’s coronation and wedding gowns.

To quote Hamish Bowles Speaking about his exhibition “In House Style we hope to bring these compelling and fascinating people and the very different worlds they inhabited to life, through the clothes and the jewels that they wore.”
